My friend told me my plant light was too far away and I didn't believe her

I had my new Monstera under a grow light in my Denver apartment, but it just wasn't growing. My friend came over, pointed at the light about four feet above the plant, and said, 'That's your problem, it's starving for light up there.' I moved it down to about a foot away last month, and I've already seen two new leaves unfurl. Has anyone else had to fix their light distance after getting stubborn about it?

damn, four FEET?? girl i thought i was bad with my setup but that's like putting a candle in the next room and wondering why it's dark in here lmao. i had the same thing with my pothos last winter, kept it two feet under a random amazon bulb and it just sat there looking sad for months. moved it down to like 10 inches and it's been throwing out leaves nonstop. these plants are dramatic but they ain't lying about needing light close enough to actually touch em.

Four feet? Even @linda_butler28's cheap light wouldn't work up there.

Wait, what kind of light was it? Like a cheap one from a big box store or a proper full spectrum grow light? That makes a huge diff.
