Sounds like you went from helicopter plant parent to a strict neglect schedule. My method is basically just forgetting they exist until they look sad.

Forgetting they exist is a solid system, @schmidt.grant. I finally just stuck a calendar reminder on my phone.

Used to water them on a strict schedule, but letting them get a little sad first actually works better.
