Mulch volcano around my neighbor's oak in Riverside made me realize what most folks get backwards
I walk past this big live oak twice a day and the mulch pile around it is stacked maybe 10 inches up the trunk, shaped like a cone. That keeps water against the bark and invites rot, which is the opposite of what mulch is for. I know because I lost a young redbud to the same thing back in 2021 before a master gardener at the Riverside library pointed it out. Now I keep mulch pulled 3 inches back from the trunk and flat out to the drip line. Anyone here had luck bringing a tree back after years of being buried too deep?
