Dropped $80 on a fancy soil moisture meter for my bonsai collection

Turns out my cheap finger-poking method was actually way more accurate, and now I got this expensive gadget sitting in a drawer. Anyone else waste cash on fancy gear that ended up being useless?

oh man, I did the exact same thing with one of those digital pH meters for my houseplants. ended up just going back to sticking my finger in the dirt like a cavewoman, works way better.

Is there something about tech that just makes simple stuff harder than it needs to be? I feel like half the gadgets I buy end up in a drawer because the old way was just fine. Sometimes a finger in the dirt tells you more than a blinking digital readout ever will.
