Appreciation post: the $25 soil moisture meter that proved me wrong about watering
I always thought those moisture probes were gimmicks, figured my 15 years of gardening in Portland gave me a feel for when my ferns needed a drink. Then my begonias kept dropping leaves no matter what I did, so I grabbed a cheap one at the local nursery. Turns out I was overwatering by a full two days because the top inch felt dry but the deeper soil near the roots was still soaked. Has anyone else found their instincts were way off once they actually measured something instead of guessing?
