Why does nobody talk about the fuel consumption on those massive competition rigs?

I read a blog post from a guy who tracked his usage and he burned through 40 pounds of lump charcoal for a single brisket cook. Has anyone else measured their fuel use for a long smoke?

Man, I feel you on this. Last summer I did a 16 hour brisket on my offset and burned through almost 30 pounds of lump in one shot. The wind was gusty and it was around 40 degrees out, so I was dumping in fuel every hour just to keep temps stable. It really stinks when you drop like 40 bucks on charcoal for one cook and still have to watch the smoke like a hawk. TV shows make it look like you just toss a log in and relax, but the reality is you're babysitting that firebox all day. Solidarity to anyone who's done the math on this stuff.

Holy cow, that's a ton of charcoal. I used a whole 20lb bag of briquettes for a pork shoulder on my offset last weekend. It adds up fast, especially if you're fighting wind or cold weather. That's the real hidden cost they never show on TV.

Actually, lump charcoal is lighter than briquettes, so 40 pounds is a huge volume.
