Switched from store-bought rubs to making my own about 8 months ago

I used to just grab a bottle of whatever rub was on sale at the grocery store. It worked okay but everything kind of tasted the same after a while. Then a guy named Dave at a competition in Kansas City last fall told me to try mixing my own with brown sugar, paprika, and some chili powder. I tweaked the ratios about 5 times before I got a brisket rub that actually brings out the meat flavor. Now I make small batches and keep them in mason jars. Has anyone else found that homemade rubs give you way more control over the final taste?

Man, that Dave sounds like he knows what he's talking about. I started making my own rubs when I accidentally bought smoked paprika instead of regular and ended up with a killer pork shoulder rub that I've been tweaking ever since. Now I keep six different mason jars on the shelf and my wife says the pantry looks like a spice lab explosion.

Smoked paprika accident turned into my go-to chicken rub, funny how that works.
