Serious question, did you know Myron Mixon only started competing because he lost his regular job?

I was reading an old interview with him on a BBQ blog from 2018, and he said he got into the competition circuit after the factory he worked at shut down. He had been cooking for family events for years but never thought about making it a job. The article said his first big win was just a few months later at a contest in Memphis. That really hit me because we always see these guys as full time pros, but sometimes they start from a rough spot. It makes me think about how many great pitmasters are out there just cooking in their backyard, not even knowing they could win. Has anyone else stumbled on a story about a top competitor that changed how you see them?

Wait, he won a big contest in Memphis just a few months after starting? That's the part that blows my mind. Going from a factory shutdown to beating people who probably spent years practicing, all in one season. It really shows how raw talent can just explode when it gets a chance. Makes you wonder how many other guys are one contest away from changing their whole life.

That "one contest away" idea from @spencer_johnson22 is heavy. But what about the pressure after that win? Everyone expects you to keep winning right away, and that can crush a person faster than any factory job. The real test is what you do when the first big moment is over.
