My shift away from mesquite after learning about its environmental impact

Mesquite is a favorite for many pitmasters, but its overuse in some areas hurts local wildlife. I now use oak from managed forests, which burns clean and supports sustainable practices. The flavor is still rich, and I feel better about my BBQ. Let's not let tradition blind us to ecological needs.

So is oak from managed forests really that much better for local ecology though?

I read an article that said managed oak forests can support more wildlife if they're mixed with other trees. But it depends on how they're managed, right? Sometimes they just plant rows of oaks and call it good, which doesn't help much. Doesn't that defeat the purpose of calling it eco-friendly? I heard from a forester that real benefits come from mimicking natural growth patterns.

I read about a study in Oregon where they tracked bird nests in those single-species oak plots versus mixed stands. The diversity was way lower in the just-oak areas, like only a couple types of birds even used them. If the goal is helping wildlife, it seems pretty weak to not mix in shrubs and younger trees too. I mean, doesn't a real forest have different ages of trees and some dead wood? Are they even trying to copy that, or is it mostly for timber?
