Back in 2015 at the Memphis in May contest, I saw a guy win whole hog with a pit he built from an old oil tank. Changed how I looked at gear forever.

Those moments really stick with you... seeing someone win big with homemade gear. It proves the cook matters more than the shiny equipment. Makes you want to tear apart the backyard for scrap metal instead of buying a new rig. Kind of freeing, really. That story is a good reminder to just get started with what you have.

Yeah that "tear apart the backyard" line from @karenw90 is so true. I mean, my first decent smoker was just an old filing cabinet I found. It smoked ribs for years before it fell apart. Idk, maybe it's just me but building something makes you learn it inside out, way more than unboxing a store-bought one.
