The weight and hum of my old hand clippers felt more real than these new electric ones.

Modern tools get the job done, but they lack the soul of the old craft.

The barber shop on Maple Street still uses those old manual clippers. You feel every cut and hear that steady hum, which just ties you to the work. Electric ones are quiet and quick, but they don't ask for any skill or attention. It's like we're removing all the friction from making things, and that friction is where the craft actually lives. The new stuff gets results, but it forgets the person holding the tool.

Ngl, @kellyperry's right, that friction is where skill grows, not just in barbering but everywhere we make things.

Wait, they still have manual clippers? That's wild. My barber switched to electric years ago. I remember that buzzing sound from when I was a kid, it felt like a real event. Now it's just a quiet whirr and you're done. Makes you wonder what else we've smoothed out until it's just a task to finish.
