Question about skipping the perm lotion step on tight curls

My old boss at the shop in Portland told me to always use perm lotion for texture cuts, but this new barber I follow online says it's a waste on tight curly hair. Tried skipping it on a 3C client last week and the fade came out uneven. Anyone else find perm lotion actually does make a difference or is it just extra work?

OH dude that's WILD your old boss told you to skip it for texture cuts. I've been cutting curly hair for years and perm lotion isn't just some extra step. It literally changes the way the hair lays down for a fade.

Jesse84 says perm lotion literally changes the way hair lays down" and i gotta push back a little on that. in my experience, if you're working with tight curly hair that's already got a solid natural texture, the perm lotion can actually weigh it down and make it harder to get that clean, even fade. the curls kind of clump together differently with that stuff on, and i've found skipping it lets me see the true shape of the curl pattern before i start cutting. your mileage may vary of course, but i've had way more blowouts using perm lotion on 3c and 4a clients than not.
