One client's question made me rethink how I quote touch-ups

Last week a regular in Austin asked why I charge full price for a 10 minute beard trim when the initial cut was $35, and honestly I couldn't give him a straight answer. I've always just charged flat rates without thinking about the time, but now I'm second-guessing whether that's fair to him or to me. How do the rest of you handle quick follow-up trims for regulars?

Ha! That client must've missed the part where you also pay for the chair, the clippers, and the fact that you didn't sleep in. Tell him the beard trim is 10 minutes, but the upkeep between trims is what he's really paying for. If he wants a timer-based price, offer to charge him by the minute and see how fast he shuts up about it. Your rate isn't about the time, it's about the skill and the fact that he's not walking out looking like a yeti. Stick to your price, or next thing you know he'll want a discount every time he gets a haircut because it's faster than last month.
