My uncle, a barber for 40 years, insisted I never use a straight razor on a client who just drank a triple espresso.

I finally understood why last week when a jittery regular nearly jumped out of the chair after a loud truck backfired outside, and I'm just thankful my hand was steady enough to avoid a real problem, but has anyone else had a close call with an overly caffeinated client?

Man, can you even imagine that moment? Your uncle was a smart man to give that advice. I had a guy come in once who was practically vibrating from energy drinks, and just the sound of the clippers turning on made him flinch hard. It completely changes how you have to work, like you're handling something fragile and live. You have to move so slow and talk so calm, and it just drains you. I'm really glad your hand was steady, that's the kind of thing that sticks with you.

Honestly, I find those clients keep me sharp and focused.

Yeah the part about moving slow and talking calm is so true. But I don't agree it always drains you. For me, once I get into that zone it's almost peaceful. It's not about being on edge the whole time, it's about matching their energy so they can settle. That focus feels good, not tiring. It's a different kind of work but it's not always a drain.
