Bought a $340 Andis Master clipper on a whim and it's the reason I didn't quit last winter
So back in January I was still running a $60 Wahl kit from Amazon that I'd had since barber school, and it kept pulling hair on fades no matter how many times I oiled it or swapped the blade. I had a guy in the chair at my shop in Tacoma, wanted a skin fade, and the clipper just stalled out halfway up the side and yanked, and he flinched and I felt like a total amateur. Next day I walked into a supply store on Pacific Ave and dropped $340 on an Andis Master, which honestly felt insane since my rent was already tight. The difference was night and day, it cut through thick hair without bogging down, and the blade stayed cool enough that I could do back to back fades without burning anybody. Within a month I was booking more kids and athletes because word got around that my fades were cleaner, and I probably made the money back in two weekends of extra chairs. My old $60 kit still sits in a drawer as a backup but I never touch it. If you're on the fence about upgrading your main clipper, what's the one tool you'd tell a newer barber to spend real money on first?
