The customer who asked me to "fix" sourdough with store yeast
Had a woman come into my stall at the farmers market last Saturday and tell me my sourdough was defective because it wasn't fluffy like the grocery store bread. She wanted me to add commercial yeast so it "worked right." I tried to explain the whole point of sourdough is the wild fermentation and the tang, but she just kept saying I was doing it wrong. After like 5 minutes I finally told her maybe she'd be happier with the Wonder bread down the street. She actually got mad and walked off. Has anyone else had people try to tell you how to run your bake when they've never even made a loaf themselves?
Fix the part about Wonder bread being down the street. Grocery stores don't usually stock Wonder bread at farmers markets, so that suggestion probably came off as more snarky than helpful. I get the frustration though. Some folks just can't wrap their heads around sourdough not being a quick fluffy sandwich loaf. They think yeast is the only way bread rises and that anything else is a mistake. You did the right thing by holding your ground, but maybe next time hand her a sample and let the tang do the talking. Some people change their minds once they taste what real sourdough is supposed to be.
