That $40 dough scraper felt like a rip off in 2019 until I did the math on my wrists
I remember buying my first bench scraper back around 2006 for like $3 at a restaurant supply place in Sacramento, just a flat piece of steel with a wooden handle, and I thought that was all anyone needed. Fast forward to 2019 and a baker friend talked me into a $40 scraper with a thicker blade and a grippy handle, and I honestly felt kind of dumb spending that much on such a simple tool. But here's the thing, after maybe 3 months of using it on stiff rye dough every morning, my wrist pain that I'd just accepted as normal was basically gone, because the stiffer blade meant I wasn't fighting the dough as hard. The old cheap one is still in my drawer and it works fine for scooping flour, but for cutting and folding wet dough it's night and day. Funny how back then I would've laughed at paying that much, and now I'd buy another one without blinking. Curious if anyone else has a tool they overpaid for that turned out to be worth every penny, or the opposite where it burned them?
