Changed my tune on thermal paste after a busted job at an old folks home last Tuesday
Had a unit die because I skimped on the paste thinking it didn't matter, but the maintenance guy there showed me the burn marks and now I use the good stuff every time, anyone else have a wake up call like that?

Good thermal paste is one of those things where you don't notice it working but you sure notice when it's not... I had a similar wake up call on a gaming rig I built years ago, thought I'd save a few bucks and the thing throttled down to a crawl within six months. That maintenance guy was right to show you the burn marks, once you see the physical damage it sticks with you for good.

Wow, that's a rough way to learn the lesson! I read somewhere that the cheap stuff can actually harden over time and lose contact, which is basically asking for trouble. @jordan653 is right, once you see those burn marks it really sticks with you permanently.
