Been doing appliance repair for about 8 years now and always just used spring clamps with regular pliers on dishwasher drain hoses. Last Tuesday in Austin a customer watched me work and asked why I wasn't using the proper clamp pliers. I kinda brushed her off saying I've done it this way forever. She didn't let it go though, she showed me how the spring clamp would twist and lose pressure if you didn't use the right tool. Tried it her way on the next job and the hose felt way more secure. Now I borrowed her clamp pliers for the day and I'm actually thinking about buying my own set. Anyone else had a homeowner call them out on something before? I'm still a little embarrassed about it.

Choosing OEM over aftermarket parts on a fridge compressor job in Austin

I had a choice last month on a Whirlpool fridge in Austin. I could use a cheaper aftermarket compressor for $180 or pay $320 for the OEM one. Everyone in my shop said go aftermarket because it's the same guts and saves money. I went OEM because I've seen too many aftermarket units fail under heavy Texas summer loads. It took me 3 hours to swap it and the fridge is still running strong with no issues. Has anyone else had better luck sticking with brand specific parts over the savings?

Found a trick for stuck ice maker augers after 4 hours of frustration

Had a GE fridge where the ice maker auger kept binding up. Took the whole assembly apart, cleaned everything, still jammed. Found out if you flip the little plastic drive coupler 180 degrees it catches fresh teeth and works perfect. Anybody else ran into that or just me?

Tried a cheap multimeter vs a Fluke on a fridge compressor call last week

I had a no-cool call on a Whirlpool fridge last Tuesday. Used my $20 meter from Harbor Freight and got weird resistance readings on the compressor. Has anyone else found a use case where the simpler tool wins out over the fancy one?

I pulled the bottom panel and found water had trickled down from a tiny leak in the door seal, right onto the main control board. Tried scrubbing the corrosion with alcohol but no luck, that board was toast. Has anyone else seen these newer Bosch models with the board mounted right below the door seal?

Rant: Repairing a dryer from 1999 vs one from 2023

I had a Whirlpool from 1999 come in last week and a newer Samsung from 2023 the same day. The old one had a bad belt, took me 15 minutes to swap it and everything was accessible from the front. The Samsung needed me to basically disassemble the whole front panel and disconnect three ribbon cables just to check the drum rollers. I don't get why manufacturers keep burying simple parts behind extra layers of plastic when nobody asked for that. Has anyone else noticed newer machines taking way longer for basic stuff than the old workhorses?
