Can we talk about charging diagnostic fees when the customer already knows what's wrong?
A customer in Boise called me last week swearing her dryer's thermal fuse was shot because she watched a video, and she wanted me to skip the $85 diagnostic and just swap the part. I told her the fee stands, then found the real problem was a clogged vent duct packed with lint about 6 inches deep, which would have fried the new fuse in a week anyway. Now I'm stuck wondering if we're being greedy or if we're actually saving people from themselves. Half the techs I know say waive the fee if they're right, the other half say never work for free. Where do you all land on this?
