Belt vs direct drive on a washing machine finally clicked for me after a repair in my own shop
I've always just swapped whatever part was bad without thinking about the whole setup. But last month I had to fix my own machine at the shop and it was a belt drive. Took me like 20 minutes. Then a customer brought in a direct drive that had a bad rotor. Took way longer to even get to it. Makes me wonder how much time I waste on direct drives. Anybody else find one type way easier to work on day to day?

Ugh yeah belt drives are so much easier. I can swap a belt in maybe 15 minutes on most machines. Direct drives feel like you need a special degree to even open them up. The rotor bolt alone is a nightmare on some.

Man, my buddy had a direct drive shred on him last summer. Took him like four hours just to get the stupid rotor bolt off with a breaker bar and a torch. After that he sold the whole machine and bought a belt drive, never looked back.
