Wrote off the Ghibli back catalog for years, one rainy Sunday in Osaka proved me wrong
I always figured Studio Ghibli movies were just pretty background noise for kids, so I skipped them for like a decade. Then last month my roommate put on Only Yesterday, which barely has any magic stuff in it at all, and I sat there for two hours straight. The way it handles a 27 year old woman looking back at her childhood just hit different than anything in the popular ones people always bring up. What are some other Ghibli films that get slept on because they don't have a giant creature in them?

Whisper of the Heart does the same thing but with a teenage girl who just wants to write, and the whole movie is basically her figuring out what she's good at and whether she's wasting her time. No talking animals, no flying castles, just a kid riding her bike to the library and stressing about her future. Ocean Waves is another one that barely gets talked about, it's this quiet little story about a love triangle in high school and it feels more like a real memory than a movie. Even The Wind Rises gets brushed off a lot because people wanted more fantasy from Miyazaki, but it's really just about a guy who loves building planes and the sadness that comes with it. Those smaller ones stick with you way longer than the loud ones honestly.
