Spent 4 hours trying to figure out why my DVD player wouldn't read disc 4 of Cowboy Bebop
I was binge watching the series again and got stuck on disc 4. The player kept spitting it out or freezing right at the beginning of "Ballad of Fallen Angels". Tried cleaning the disc with a microfiber cloth, then a tiny bit of rubbing alcohol, still nothing. Finally noticed a hairline scratch along the edge from like 20 years ago when I borrowed it from my buddy Mike. Anyone else have an older anime DVD set that just refuses to play certain episodes?

My copy of Evangelion from 2003 has the same issue with disc 5, the one with "The Day Tokyo-3 Stood Still". It froze every single time during the elevator scene with Misato and Kaji. I tried everything too - different players, cleaning it with those wipes that are supposed to fix scratches, even tried the toothpaste trick my buddy recommended. Nothing worked. Ended up having to borrow a digital copy from a friend just to watch that episode. It sucks because those old sets had such cool cover art but the discs are just wrecked after all these years.
