Rant: People keep calling filler arcs "non-canon" wrong
Filler means stuff the studio made up that's not in the manga. Non-canon includes whole movies or novels that are official but separate. Saw someone claim the G-8 arc in One Piece was non-canon. It's anime-only filler, but it's still a great arc. How do you explain the difference without sounding like a jerk?

Wait so if Oda outlined some novels himself, does that mean they could contradict stuff in the manga later and still be considered canon? That's a weird gray area for sure.

Man that's rough, I feel you. It's so annoying when people mix up terms like that and you just wanna correct them without coming off as a know-it-all.

A buddy of mine who translates manga for a living told me that the official One Piece novels are considered canon by Oda himself, even though they aren't in the manga. Something about how he outlined a few of them. So that makes the G-8 thing even messier, since it's not even in that gray area. Filler is just the studio's excuse to stall, while non-canon is more like a separate universe with its own rules.
