Is it fair to hate a show just because of its fanbase?

Last month I finally watched Attack on Titan after years of avoiding it because of the loud fans online. I actually enjoyed the story and the animation, but I kept catching myself thinking about how certain parts of the fandom act, and it soured some scenes for me. On one hand, a show is its own thing and you should judge it on its own merits, but on the other hand, the community is part of the experience, especially when you discuss episodes weekly. I ended up dropping the second season just because I didn't want to be associated with the people who spam theories everywhere. Does anyone else let the fanbase influence their enjoyment, or do you keep them completely separate?

Man, a buddy of mine went through the exact same thing with Rick and Morty. He loved the first two seasons, then got tired of every guy at his work quoting it and wearing the pickle shirt, and he just stopped watching even though the show itself was still good. It stinks, but the crowd around a thing really can change how it feels to sit down and watch it.
