I used to think all anime was the same until I watched 'Monster' last year.

I was only watching the big shonen shows and thought that was the whole medium. Then a friend in Chicago made me sit through the first five episodes of 'Monster', and I realized I had been missing out on entire genres of storytelling. How many other great shows have I skipped because I stuck to one type?

Jumping in on slice of life after Monster is a solid move. You want something like Barakamon or March Comes in Like a Lion for that slow burn, character driven stuff without the heavy plot tension. Gives your brain a break from all that psychological thriller business.
