Heard a guy at Fanime say 90s dubs are better than subs and it got me thinking

I was in line for a panel at Fanime last weekend and some dude was going off about how he only watches dubs from the 90s because the voice actors had more soul. He said stuff like Cowboy Bebop and Trigun dubs set the standard and modern voice work feels too polished. Anyone else think older dubs actually had more character than what we get now?

Man that Trigun dub is exactly what I'm talking about. Vash's voice actor sounded like he was actually losing his mind half the time, which totally fit the character. I still throw that DVD in sometimes just for the energy of it, even if the lip flaps are way off.

That's a fair take on 90s dubs having more soul, but I gotta push back on Cowboy Bebop setting the standard - it actually didn't get its English dub until the early 2000s on Adult Swim, not the 90s. The Trigun dub was indeed 90s though and that one had some real raw energy to it.
