Warning: stop using WD-40 on your old laptop hinges
I saw three posts this week where people sprayed WD-40 on stuck laptop hinges to loosen them up. It made my 2012 ThinkPad hinge seize up completely after 2 days because the lubricant dried into a sticky mess. Has anyone else ruined a hinge this way or found a silicone-based lube that actually works for older plastic pivots?

Honestly, "sticky mess" is the exact right way to describe it. I learned that lesson the hard way on my old Dell, now the hinge just makes a sad crunching noise whenever I open it.

Oh man, @black.margaret you're not wrong. I had a laptop that literally started shedding sticky residue all over my desk.
