Unpopular opinion: swapping out thermal paste on a 2012 laptop isn't worth the hassle anymore
I used to crack open my old Dell every 6 months to reapply Arctic Silver and drop temps by 10 degrees, but after my third attempt last week with a tube of MX-4 I ended up with a cracked fan clip and the machine still runs at 85C under load, has anyone else just given up on these crusty old hinges and started using a cooling pad instead?

A cracked fan clip sounds more like a rough handling problem than a paste problem. Maybe it's time to just let the old girl rest.

@jakewhite is right that cracked clips come from force, not paste. But here's the thing - once you start snapping plastic on a 2012 laptop, that's the universe telling you to stop. By the third repaste you're fighting worn-out heatpipes and dried-out thermal pads under the VRMs anyway. A decent cooling pad for 20 bucks will drop temps just as much without risking breaking the hinge for the fourth time. Why keep wrestling with crusty old hardware when a passive fix does the same job?
