Told my buddy his old ThinkPad was fine for daily use, he called me crazy

I was at a coffee shop in Portland last week and overheard a guy telling his friend that any laptop over 5 years old is basically e-waste. I brought up my 2012 ThinkPad T430 that still runs great with an SSD and Linux, and he laughed at me. Has anyone else had luck convincing people that these older machines still work fine with a few upgrades?
