TIL a simple SSD swap beats any software fix for an old laptop

I spent two hours last weekend trying to disable startup programs and clear temp files on my 2012 ThinkPad. It still crawled like a snail opening Chrome. Then I remembered a $25 SSD I had sitting in a drawer, swapped it in, and the thing booted in 30 seconds. Why do we waste so much time on tweaks when the hardware is the real bottleneck? Has anyone else hit that wall where you just give up and throw a drive at it?

Same here, I did the exact same thing with a 2011 Dell that was basically a paperweight. Spent like a whole afternoon disabling services and running disk cleanup, got maybe a 5 percent speed bump. Then I found a cheap 120GB SSD on sale, swapped it in, and the thing felt like a brand new laptop. It's crazy how much time we waste on software stuff when the real fix is just throwing a faster drive at the problem. Honestly, I think most people give up on old laptops way too soon because they don't realize how much an SSD changes everything. You hit that wall and it's just like, why did I even bother with all those tweaks.

Gotta ask though - did you clone your old drive over or do a fresh install? I see people debating this all the time and I swear fresh installs feel snappier even on the same SSD, like the old system just carries too much junk with it. And once you did get that SSD in, did you notice any weird driver headaches or was it truly plug and play? Because my 2012 Toshiba threw a fit with the SATA controller after I swapped mine, took me another hour to track down the right AHCI driver.
