Spent 20 minutes with a retired IBM repairman at a coffee shop last Saturday
He told me that keeping a CRT monitor alive is mostly about not letting dust cake the flyback transformer - said he used a clean paintbrush every 3 months. Has anyone else had luck fixing a fuzzy display on an old Trinitron with just canned air?

Check the solder joints on the neck board before blaming the flyback.

Exactly. "Check the solder joints on the neck board" is where I'd start too. I've had sets where the flyback tested fine but the picture was still a mess. @dylan_patel is right that cold joints on that neck board can cause all kinds of weird symptoms. A quick reflow usually fixes it if you catch it early. Worth checking before you swap a part that costs real money.
