Shoutout to the guy at the dump who saved my old ThinkPad

I was tossing a 2005 ThinkPad at the county recycling center near Spokane and this older guy pulled it out of the bin, said 'wait, that's just a dead CMOS battery,' and handed me a spare he had in his truck. Fixed it right there with a dollar part and now it runs my shop's inventory fine, has anyone else had a stranger save a machine from the trash?

That guy is a legend. Same thing happened to me with an old Dell from 2008, this fella at the transfer station saw me about to toss it and said the hard drive was fine, just needed a new power jack. He had one in his toolbox, soldered it right there on his tailgate... been using it as a backup for years now. People who know old tech really are something else, they can spot a fixable machine from a mile away. Love that the dump has its own little rescue squad sometimes.
