Passed 200,000 miles on my 1998 Honda Civic and people think I'm crazy

I know everyone here is all about keeping old tech running, but for me it's old cars too. I just hit 200,000 miles on my 1998 Honda Civic last Tuesday. Most folks told me to junk it at 150,000 and buy something newer. But I see it different. I've done all the maintenance myself with basic tools and a manual I found online. The engine still runs smooth and I get 35 miles per gallon easy. Buying a new car would cost me $30,000 and leave me with monthly payments for years. Has anyone else here passed a big milestone on something people told you to throw away long ago?

Honestly, "people think I'm crazy" for hitting 200k? Tell them my buddy's 99 Civic hit 350k before the rust finally won the fight. Ngl, they're the crazy ones dropping $30k on a new car that'll beep at you if you breathe wrong. I got a 2005 Toyota with 240k and it still smells like stale coffee and bad decisions, but it starts every morning without a tantrum. Tbh, your Civic is probably worth more than their car payment. Keep that thing rolling, ignore the haters.

hold up, let me be the weird one here and say maybe they got a point. I mean yeah 200k is cool and all but that car is from 1998, it's basically a rolling safety hazard at this point. No airbags worth mentioning, no ABS probably, and if you get in a crash you're gonna feel it way more than someone in a 2024 car. Plus all that time you spend fixing it yourself is time you could be doing literally anything else. I get the appeal of no car payment but there's something to be said for not having to worry about breaking down on the highway at 10pm.
