Overheard a guy at the electronics recycler say he keeps old tablets alive with a specific battery trick

I was dropping off a dead laptop at the E-Waste center on Walnut Street yesterday when this older guy starts talking about his 10 year old Samsung Galaxy Tab. He said he keeps it running by never letting the battery go below 40% and he replaces the battery himself every 2 years with a $12 kit from eBay. I never thought about babying the battery that much, I always just charge it whenever. Has anyone else tried this trick for keeping an ancient tablet going?

8 years with a scratched up screen and a sticking home button and he's still proving a point? That's pretty hardcore dedication right there...

You ever seen someone treat a tablet like it's made of glass? My buddy Mark does this exact thing with his old iPad mini. He's had it for 8 years now and it still works for reading comics and watching YouTube. He follows the same 40% rule and swaps the battery himself whenever it starts getting bad. I asked him why he doesn't just get a new one and he said it's about proving a point, not saving money. His screen is all scratched up and the home button sticks but the thing just keeps going because of the battery care. I don't have the patience for it myself but I gotta respect the dedication.
