My neighbor's 2007 Dell laptop taught me a lesson about thermal paste
I was helping my neighbor clean out his garage last weekend and he pulled out this old Dell Inspiron that still booted up. He said he just reapplied thermal paste every couple years and it never overheated on him. Made me realize I've been babying my own old Thinkpad with compressed air and fans but never touched the paste under the heatsink. Has anyone else had a machine come back to life just from fresh thermal compound?

Honestly never thought paste mattered that much but this changes my mind.

Depends on the laptop honestly. Some of those old Dells had terrible stock paste that dried up in a year, but a lot of machines ran fine for a decade with the factory stuff. People act like thermal paste is magic but the real fix is usually just cleaning out dust bunnies.
