My brother was wrong about Windows 98 drivers on a modern SSD

My brother Mark kept telling me to use a SATA SSD adapter with a patched driver pack for my old Compaq deskpro. I finally tried it two weeks ago in my shop in Albany and the boot time went from 4 minutes to 45 seconds. He was right about the transfer speeds being fine on that old ATA controller. Has anyone else had luck with those generic driver packs or is there a better fix for old hardware?

Gotta disagree with you on this one. Those generic driver packs are a gamble at best. I've seen them corrupt installs more times than I can count, especially on older chipsets like that Compaq. Sure, the speed boost is nice, but you're trusting a random patch job with your data. A clean slipstream with the original manufacturer drivers takes more time but it's way more stable in the long run.

Huh, really? I mean, I get where you're coming from but is it really that big of a deal? I've used those packs on a bunch of crusty old HP desktops and a couple of Dells and they worked fine. Yeah, maybe I got lucky or whatever, but a "patch job" is a bit dramatic. If you're that worried about your data, just make a backup before you start, not like it's rocket science. Overthinking the whole thing, honestly.
