Had a guy at the thrift store in Boise tell me something about CRT monitors that stuck with me
He was buying a dusty old Dell monitor and said most people junk these because they think the picture is dying, but really it's just the capacitors drying out. He offered to show me how to swap them for like $3 in parts. Made me wonder how many other gadgets I've tossed that just needed a simple fix like that.

Saw a YouTube video where a guy fixed a $2,000 TV with a $5 capacitor.

ben436 nailed it with that "$5 capacitor" line. That's exactly the kind of stuff that gets me - we're so quick to throw out a TV or monitor when it starts glitching, but half the time it's just the capacitors on the power supply board bulging or leaking. I've saved two old Samsung monitors that way, cost me maybe $8 total for a bag of caps off Amazon. The tricky part is learning to solder without burning yourself, but once you get it down it's like a superpower for rescuing perfectly good gear.
