Can we talk about thermal paste on old laptops?

For years I just used whatever cheap thermal paste came with a cooler or I found at a local shop. Then a guy on a YouTube comment section said I was probably using stuff that was 5 years old and dried out. He pointed me to a tube of Arctic MX-4 that cost me $8 and showed me how much difference a fresh application makes. I tried it on my old Dell Latitude from 2012 and the CPU temps dropped 12 degrees C under load. Now I toss any paste that has been sitting in my drawer for more than a year. Has anyone else noticed a big difference just from using newer paste?

Got an old ThinkPad T420 that was hitting 95C under load. Wiped off the crusty factory paste and put on some fresh MX-4 and it dropped to 78C. Made the thing feel like a new machine for a $8 fix.

You know what, I used to think thermal paste was one of those things people just made a big deal out of for no reason. Like, how much difference could a little grey goop really make? I figured if the computer turned on and didn't instantly die, it was fine. Then last winter I dug out my old Dell Latitude from a closet and it sounded like a jet engine just loading up a webpage. I finally caved and did the same thing you did, swapped the dried up old stuff for some Arctic Silver, and the temp drop was honestly shocking. It went from feeling like it was about to melt down to running cool and quiet, all for less than what I spend on lunch. That really changed my mind about it being a waste of time.
