Why did it take me 3 days to fix a simple toilet flapper?
Last week my toilet started running nonstop. I figured it would be a quick 20 minute job to swap the flapper. Well, I bought the wrong size first, then the chain was too long, then I realized the old seal had crumbled into the fill valve. Three days later and two trips to the hardware store, I finally got it done. Has anyone else had a simple home repair turn into a bigger project than it should have been?

Three days sounds about right" - that's the UNIVERSAL truth right there. I swear every "simple" home fix follows this same rule: it ALWAYS costs triple the time and double the money. Like changing a light fixture that reveals some godawful wiring nightmare from the 70s. It's like houses know when you're trying to do something easy and they fight back.

Three days sounds about right for a "simple" toilet repair. You might have overlooked one thing though - the water level in the tank. A flapper needs the water level to be about an inch below the overflow tube to seal properly. If you adjusted the chain length but the water level is too high or too low, the flapper wont seat right and itll keep running. That happened to me once and I chased the problem for half a day before I realized the float needed a slight bend. Also, the crumbled seal in the fill valve is a common issue on older toilets, sometimes you have to replace the whole fill valve if pieces got stuck inside. Not saying its always the case, but double check that water level before you call it done.
