Graphite powder saved me on a door reno job...

When I was helping a friend redo a front door... I noticed the lock was grinding. So I tried a drop of graphite powder instead of oil... It worked way better and doesn't attract dust. Now I always carry a small tube in my kit for similar jobs.

That graphite powder trick is a lifesaver for sticky locks. Oil just gums up over time, but graphite stays dry and smooth. The key is to use a tiny amount, too much and it makes a mess. I've found it works on old cabinet hinges too, not just doors and windows. Keep the tube sealed tight, it gets everywhere otherwise. Once you try it, you'll never go back to wet lubricants.

All this talk over graphite, even from @webb.seth, is it really that big a deal?

How do you apply graphite powder without making a huge mess? I use a small brush to dust it into the keyhole, which keeps it contained. Graphite doesn't attract dirt like oil, so the lock stays clean and works smoothly for years. If you pour it directly, it clumps up and can even jam the mechanism. It's also great for old desk drawers that stick, just a light coating on the slides. Once you get the hang of it, you'll never deal with a sticky lock again.
