Remembering a trick for old sash weights from a job in Boston

Back in the early 2000s, I was restoring some original windows in a brownstone and the sash cords were totally shot. The old method of fishing new cord through the weight pocket was a huge pain. An older guy on site showed me how to use a heavy steel nut tied to some mason's line; you drop it down the pocket, it pulls the new cord right through. Saved me hours on each window. Anyone else have a good trick for dealing with those old weight systems?

Wait, you seriously taped paperclips together? That sounds like a recipe for pure frustration. I can't imagine that floppy mess actually worked.

Honestly, that nut trick is a lifesaver. Tbh my first time trying to replace a cord without it, I spent like 45 minutes just swearing at the wall. Ended up using a bunch of paperclips taped together like some kind of sad, floppy robot snake. It did not go well.

Yeah @hugo50, a bent coat hanger finally got it for me after my own paperclip disaster.
