Actually, it's not just dirt and rust. On those old trucks, you gotta watch for the old butyl tape too. That stuff gets hard and crumbles. If you don't scrape every bit out, the new sealant can't stick right. Still a five minute job, just a different kind of gunk to clean.

Spot on. That old dirt and rust turns into a leak real fast. Seen it a hundred times. Guys skip it to save five minutes and lose half a day on a comeback. Just lazy work.
