Why my cheap streak plate is the best tool in my geology kit
I used to think identifying minerals was all about fancy guides and smartphone apps. That changed when I learned to use a basic streak plate. Last fall, I found a dark rock I was sure was magnetite. The streak came out brown, not black, so it was actually ilmenite. That one test saved me from a big mistake. Now I always carry a streak plate and a bottle of vinegar for quick checks. These simple methods give you real answers, not just guesses. If you want to get good at geology, start with the hands-on stuff. It builds a foundation no app can replace.

Totally agree, my streak plate has saved me from so many wrong guesses. I had a similar moment with what I thought was pyrite, but the streak was wrong and it turned out to be chalcopyrite. That little plate just cuts through the confusion instantly!

My friend grabbed a blue rock thinking it was azurite. The streak came out pale blue, not the right shade. Ended up being chrysocolla instead. Those little plates always tell the truth.

Remember stumbling over a heavy metallic piece I swore was galena. Dragged it across the plate and got this bright red streak, classic hematite. Felt like the rock itself was correcting me, you know? That plate doesn't care what you hope to find.
