Went to the DMV last Tuesday and watched three different employees give three different answers to the same question about expired registration.

You've been to the DMV before, right? Always get their answer in writing or ask for a supervisor to confirm, because those three different answers are worth exactly what you paid for them. Keep that paper with you until your registration is sorted out.
