So I dropped $40 on a 'smart' plant pot that texts you when it needs water

Saw this thing online, looked cool, said it had a sensor and would send alerts to my phone. Set it up with my fiddle leaf fig, followed all the steps. For two weeks, nothing. Then I get a text at 3 AM saying 'CRITICAL: I AM THIRSTY.' Woke up in a panic, watered it. Next day, same text. Watered it again. This went on for a week until the poor plant was basically drowning and started dropping leaves. Turns out the sensor was just junk, stuck in a permanent 'dry' reading. Killed a $30 plant and wasted $40 on a gadget that just spammed me. Anyone know a good, simple way to actually tell when a plant needs water without all the tech nonsense?

Honestly, my moisture meter was like ten bucks and works fine.

Classic case of tech making a simple thing way too complicated. My grandma just sticks her finger in the dirt, and her plants are always perfect.

Right? @amymartinez My grandma does the same thing! I still use a meter for my fussy plants though, some of them are so dramatic about being dry.
