Showerthought: I tried to fix my neighbor's squeaky door in Portland with WD-40 and now it sounds like a dying goose
The hinge was making this awful noise every time they opened it, so I grabbed the can and gave it a good spray. Instead of going quiet, it started making this low, honking sound that happens about two seconds after the door moves. I learned that sometimes you need the right lubricant, not just the one you have in the garage. Has anyone else had a simple fix turn into a whole new problem?

Read that WD-40 can attract dust.

@jesseb20 that's actually true for some types of WD-40. The regular formula has a solvent that evaporates but leaves a sticky residue behind, and yeah dust clings to it like crazy. @lisa_jones21 you're right about the lithium grease being better for hinges, that stuff stays put and doesn't get all gummy. Did you hose the hinge down with the whole can or just spray a little puff on it?

That's the funniest thing I've heard all day, a door sounding like a dying goose. Maybe you just invented a new security system, nobody would dare enter with that noise. @jesseb20 has a point about it attracting dust, so now you've got a dusty, honking door. Should have used some white lithium grease or something made for hinges. So is the neighbor just living with the goose sounds now, or did you have to go buy the right stuff?
