The great garage floor debate: epoxy versus just a good scrub

For a decade, I just hosed and scrubbed my concrete floor with a stiff brush and some soap. It was fine, but always looked dirty. Then, after a big oil spill from my truck's project, I spent about $600 on a two-part epoxy kit. The prep was a pain, but now it's a wipe-clean surface that actually reflects light. Has anyone else made the switch and found it worth the hassle and cost?

What about the long term wear and tear though? I mean, my friend's epoxy started chipping after a few years of heavy use, especially where he dropped tools. Maybe the prep has to be absolutely perfect for it to last.

Honestly, your friend's experience shows the real issue. People forget epoxy is basically a thick plastic coating, not a solid slab. So when you drop something heavy, that force has to go somewhere. If the floor underneath flexes even a tiny bit, the epoxy can't move with it and just cracks. Tbh the prep matters, but the building's foundation and how much the floor moves under weight matters way more.
