My sister told me to just throw all the leftover veggies in a pot with some broth

She said it would be a 'clever fridge clean-out soup'. I had half a zucchini, a sad bell pepper, some wilting spinach, and a container of leftover rice. I simmered it all for about 20 minutes last night. It turned into a weird, mushy, greenish sludge that tasted like regret. Has anyone else tried this and actually made something good? What's your go-to recipe for using up random fridge bits?

Okay, but the rice is the killer there (it just turns to paste). I always leave any grains or pasta out and add them at the very end, just to heat through. What kind of broth did you use? A weak veggie broth with all those mild veggies is gonna taste like nothing. I swear by having a tube of tomato paste or a splash of soy sauce to punch up the flavor when the veg is bland.

A dash of fish sauce works even better than soy for that deep savory kick.
