PSA: I lost a month's income because of a spoken deal gone bad
I agreed to a freelance job with just a spoken deal. The client started asking for more work without extra pay. When I billed them, they said no to the added costs. Now I'm short on cash and rethinking how I do business. What's your way to stop clients from adding free work?

Just a spoken deal for a whole month's pay? That is genuinely terrifying, I'd be freaking out. Grace has the right idea with the follow up email, that's a lifesaver. I started doing the same thing after a smaller version of this happened to me. Now even for tiny jobs I send a one line summary of what we agreed to, it takes two minutes. It feels awkward at first but way less awkward than fighting over unpaid invoices later.

Ugh, learned that one the hard way too. My method now is sending a quick email after any call that says "just to confirm what we discussed" and lists the exact work included. It doesn't feel formal, but it gives you a paper trail. I call it my 'forgetful brain receipt'.
